New Music, Art, and Soccer
November 2, 2022 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
GRAMMY® Award winning Ukrainian-American pianist Nadia Shpachenko will present a new music workshop at UCR’s Florence Bayz Music Series on Wednesday, November 2 at 12 pm.
Dr. Shpachenko will discuss her latest September 23, 2022 release of world premiere recordings “Invasion: Music and Art for Ukraine,” featuring music by American Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Lewis Spratlan and art by numerous Ukrainian artists. This recording was made in response to the tragic war in Ukraine, with all proceeds donated to Ukraine humanitarian aid charities. It features stunning art made in response to the war and in response to all the musical works on the album, created by artists currently living in Ukraine. Dr. Shpachenko will discuss her collaboration on this project with the composer, musicians, and visual artists, focusing on the powerful connection between music, visual arts, and current events.
She will also discuss her upcoming album that she will be recording in January 2023, featuring world premiere recordings of soccer-inspired commissioned works for piano, voice, cleats, and electronics by Christopher Cerrone, Ian Dicke, Oliver Dubon, Tom Flaherty, Dana Kaufman, David Sanford, Adam Schoenberg, Evan Ware, and Pamela Z.
This interactive workshop will include discussions and live performances/demonstrations by Dr. Shpachenko.
